The Lone Wolf Lugo Land Residency

The Lone Wolf Lugo Land Residency is a one-month fellowship award given to a Master of Fine Arts candidate at PennDesign. The fellowship offers the selected student time to produce a new body of work within the context of the Lugo Land project in the northern Italian city of Lugo, in the province of Ravenna, from mid-December to mid-January.

First initiated by Terry Adkins (artist and Penn Professor), and Luca Nostri (curator of Lugo Land), with the patronage of the Department of Culture of the city of Lugo, the residency has been dedicated to Professor Adkins, following his untimely death in 2014, and is named after the artist’s The Lone Wolf Recital Corps project.

Lugo Land attempts to facilitate the generation of new notions of place in the contemporary world, through the critical response of contemporary artists. Started in 2004 as a photographic project, the residency is now open to all mediums, using art to puzzle out the complicated ways in which we are shaped and affected by place.  The fellowship is inspired by the Winterreise of German romanticism, and by the legacy of the curious and lonesome Wanderer protagonist from the central European literary tradition (Robert Walser, Winfried George Sebald).

The ideal candidate is an artist willing to engage in a solitary artistic experience in order to focus and deepen their relationship to their work. For the purposes of a productive and stimulating residency, preference will be given to projects that seek to combine simplicity and lightness with the depth of thought and language.
